- Teaching Mathematics as a Language - What Gets Lost in the Translation?
Did you know that Mathematics has parts of speech and sentence structure, just as does any spoken language? Did you know that understanding the "grammar" of Mathematics greatly helps student understanding of problem-solving and applications? In this workshop, Tom Clark, founder of VideoText Interactive, and author of "Algebra: A Complete Course", and "Geometry: A Complete Course", clearly and humorously demonstrates this quality of mathematical language. At last, you will truly understand the roles of all types of mathematical symbols, and you will see how easy it is to translate between Mathematics and English, enabling you to improve your understanding, and teaching, of "story problems", at all levels.
- UH, OH! The Fractions Are Moving In! (There goes the neighborhood!)
Since algebraic fractions are a much more complex form than arithmetic fractions, the memorization of the operational techniques generally taught in arithmetic, simply will not hold in Algebra. In this instructional workshop, Tom Clark, founder of VideoText Interactive, and author of "Algebra: A Complete Course", and "Geometry: A Complete Course", humorously explains, in detail, the "reasons behind the rules". Now students can develop a clear, conceptual approach to working with fractions, without a reliance on meaningless shortcuts and tricks, preparing them to be much more successful when working with algebraic relations.
- Identifying and Avoiding the Trouble Spots in Math
Join Tom Clark, founder of VideoText Interactive, and author of "Algebra: A Complete Course", and "Geometry: A Complete Course", as he offers an entertaining and educational session designed to help you discover the reasons behind the difficulty on several of the traditional trouble spots in math. Topics discussed will be determined by the audience, and may include division of fractions and multiplication of decimals (using those mindless rules), long-division, story-problems, positive and negative numbers, and numerous others, all of which seem to indicate that Mathematics is just naturally "difficult".
- Teenage Math - What to Teach and How to Teach It
Are you struggling with teaching math to your teenagers? Do the words "ALGEBRA" and "GEOMETRY" strike fear in the hearts of your homeschool family? In this workshop, Tom Clark, founder of VideoText Interactive, and author of "Algebra: A Complete Course", and "Geometry: A Complete Course", will explore with you, sometimes humorously, the reasons that instruction can be difficult and will then get serious about WHY teenagers need higher level math. If you or your students have ever asked, "When are we going to use this Algebra stuff?", then this workshop is for you!

- Chemistry and Physics - The Foundation for All Science
The amount of scientific information has grown exponentially since the early 50's. Today we know much more about diseases, air pollution, medicine, black holes, DNA, microtubules, and a thousand other subjects, and as a result, our students are required to learn scientific facts that did not exist when most adults were in grade school. How can anyone possibly master any of this information? The answer is by learning chemistry and physics. Even the most esoteric science comes from chemistry and physics. Learn how to teach your students the foundations of science with chemistry and physics so they can have the tools necessary to understand a wide array of scientific subjects.
- Teaching Elementary and Middle School Chemistry and Physics
Join Dr. Keller as she explores the specifics of teaching elementary and middle school chemistry and physics. Chemistry and physics are not difficult to teach, yet most K-8 students only learn biology and earth/space and are not exposed to chemistry or physics until high school. Dr. Keller will show you how to organize these core subjects into easy-to-use categories that will enable your student to better understand science. Also, learn how to turn science demonstrations into real experiments for pre-high schoolers by using the scientific method.
- Critical Thinking for Science
What does it really mean to think critically? Critical thinking is a term that has become a buzz word in many educational circles, but few know what it really means. Critical thinking is about asking questions. Using the Socratic approach, Dr. Keller has developed a method for students to learn how to think critically about scientific data. In this five-step process Dr. Keller will show you how to help your students build a "critical thinking lens" that can be sued to examine any scientific claim. By learning how to evaluate scientific data, your student will gain a better understanding of how scientific process and thought occurs.
- Using the Internet as a Study Tool for Science
Have you ever been searching a topic on the Internet only to realize three hours later that you are absorbed in a completely different subject unrelated to the topic you were first exploring? Not only are you researching an unrelated topic, but you have not idea where you've been now that you are ten or twenty links away from your original website. The Internet can be both a powerful research tool and a colossal waste of time for students. Let Dr. Keller show you how to help your students use the Internet as a successful research tool — and keep track of their Internet explorations.

(Appropriate for teens of all ages.)
- The Sacred Claim - The Power of a Poured-Out Life
In this session, Eric and Leslie Ludy explore a crucial aspect of the Gospel that many Christians overlook - every believer's call to be God's hands and feet to the lost, the weak, the poor, the destitute and the orphan. Teens have an incredible opportunity during this season of life to make an eternal impact upon the world around them. Eric and Leslie challenge the self-focused mentality that many young people adopt during their teen years, and motivate them toward a God-honoring, outward focused lifestyle.
- Spiritual Athlete - Rising Above Mediocrity
What if our one step forward into this Christian life and experience, is still ten thousand steps short of where God is desiring to take us? This session explores the endless frontier of following Christ, and motivates believers to move beyond complacency and mediocrity into a vibrant, ever-deepening personal walk with Jesus Christ.
- Understanding the Gospel - Knowing the God of the Bible vs. the God of Modern Christianity
Grace is more than the merciful hug of God; it's the divine enabling power of His Spirit to transform a human life from the inside out; to supernaturally equip us to live a life that would be impossible in our own strength. Love, joy and peace are not meant to be merely nice-sounding Scriptural concepts, but rather the daily experience and outflow of the Christian's life. In this session, Eric Ludy casts a vision for historic, Biblical Christianity, and gives a clear understanding for how to not just esteem Truth, but live it out daily through the enabling power of God.
Andrew Pudewa
- Teaching Boys & Other Children Who Would Rather Make Forts All Day
Children like to do what they can do; they want to do what they think they can do, and they hate to do what they think they cannot do. If you want excited and enthusiastic children who learn well, you must understand these key laws of motivation, and focus on the essential requirement of relevancy. If it matters, children will learn it, and if it doesn't, they won't. This session will enlighten you with specific ways to find and create relevancy for children, even when they have no apparent interest.
- Reaching the Reluctant Writer
Many children really do not like to write. Why? This workshop will answer that basic question and teach a specific and successful method of separating the complex process of writing into the smallest possible steps, making it possible for even the most reluctant writer to produce short but complete compositions. He will be proud and motivated to write again. If you remove the problem of what to write, you will be free to help your child learn how to write, using source texts, key word outlines, and "dress-up" checklists. Results guaranteed!
- Spelling and the Brain
Many children (and some adults) have difficulty learning to spell, but the difficulty may not be with the student so much as with the method of presentation. Find out in this workshop how spelling information is most efficiently stored in the brain, and why. With a greater insight into the nature of spelling and neurological functions presented in this workshop, the parent/teacher will be well-equipped to meet the needs of all their children, not just the "naturally' good spellers.
- Instant Improvement in Writing
For those who enjoy writing or for those who don't, this concrete method of teaching and learning stylistic variety will seem almost like magic. Useful at the elementary level and equally useful for the university student, this approach to sentence pattern mastery is powerful! Likely you'll ask, "Why didn't I learn this when I was in school?" The words "writing style" will take on a whole new dimension.
- The Profound Influence of Music on Life
Music has become such an ever-present influence in our daily life, we seldom stop to consider what effect it has on us. But we must. As we changed over the last 100 years from being music "makers" to music "consumers," we have gradually lost control over, and even awareness of, our auditory environment. In what way is music beneficial to our bodies and minds? In what circumstances can it actually be harmful? Solid scientific research provides some astounding answers to such questions-indeed, facts that must not be ignored by today's parents and children.
- The Influence of Music on Life, Part 2 - Evaluating Musical Elements
Picking up from where "The Profound Influence of Music on Life" talk leaves off, this presentation uses musical samples to help listeners learn to hear more actively, both to gain the most out of their listening experience as well as to encourage "defensive' listening and teach their children to listen with greater discernment. Musical selections of baroque, classical, folk, and popular genres are played and discussed, with syncopation, pattern and complexity. Without saying, "this is good, this is bad," Mr. Pudewa presents a unique perspective on the question of whether all music is equally beneficial to the Christian.
Elizabeth Smith

Homeschooling is more than education. The home school experience can be like traversing a mine field. This session will tell how to stop around the land mines to insure success with your at-home learner. This clear Christian message will put us squarely in God's lesson plan for success.

This session presents important questions to ask regarding homeschooling teens and stresses building good relationships at home. The academic advantages and getting them ready for college are discussed. For those deciding about homeschooling during the teen years, this is a must. Also, hear Elizabeth's "Top 10 Priorities" for homeschooling your teen.
Mike Smith
- Remembering the Reason: Renewing the Vision
This is a plenary session that addresses the key issues in homeschooling for new homeschoolers, veteran homeschoolers and leaders in the homeschool community. The talk provides a general overview of the history of homeschooling and where we are now; the benefits of homeschooling to the family and to the individual members of the family; and some secrets on how we can take the pressure off of homeschoolers, especially homeschool moms. For those homeschoolers that are beginning to tire, and perhaps lose vision, he refreshes their recollection on the real reason for homeschooling and offers practical suggestions for making homeschooling a joy, rather than drudgery. This talk consistently receives the highest evaluations and hundreds of moms and dads have shared that the concepts in this talk help them to see the potential for greatness in their family and gave them hope in seeing how God can use their weaknesses for His glory.
- The Angry Child -What Makes Him Ticked-Off?
We Christians in the homeschool community have hears a lot about our responsibilities to bring our children up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. As a matter of fact, it is the key verse for Christian homeschoolers. That verse is found in Ephesians 6:4. However, we sometimes ignore the first part of the verse which says, "And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath." In this topic, Mike Smith addresses areas that we parents may not be aware of that do provoke our children to wrath. If there is anger in your family, this discussion is absolutely essential for you. Mike will discuss good anger and bad anger. Yes, there is good anger. He will also address the danger of anger in a child that is allowed to progress to a habit through the five steps of how a child who is angry ultimately becomes rebellious. He will explain helpful and practical tips on how not to frustrate our children, and what to do if we recognize we've done so. A biblical perspective will be given on how to discipline children and to focus on a harmonious marital relationship, which is the chief ingredient to a harmonious family.
- The Father's Role in Home Education
Almost every father has heard that he is to take the leadership role in the family spiritually, physically, and in every other way. However, many fathers will tell you that no one has ever told them how to be an effective leader with their children, and especially in the area of spiritual development. Michael Smith, a homeschooling father since 1982, will present some encouragement and practical tips on how fathers can be a helpful participant in the home education program and a leader in the home. Insight will be presented on the mental and emotional dynamics of various ways that mother and children can benefit from specific activities of the fathers. Suggestions will be made on how dads can be more effective as a husband. Overriding the entire talk will be the open admission by the presenter of his many failures and a few successes in this whole area of parenting. The session will conclude with six things that homeschooling mothers have shared as the primary way that dads can be most effective in their homeschool program.
- How to Measure Success in Homeschooling
This presentation is based upon scriptural principles gleaned from King Jehoshaphat of Judah and the teachings of Jesus Christ. This session involves more of a general encouragement and challenge to homeschoolers than to specific direction on how to homeschool. However, there will be specific application principles that will be given in a 1-2-3 etc. format to help those who like to take away specific points to overcome fear of failure, one of the greatest enemies of homeschooling moms.
- Parental Rights: The Next Great Battle for Homeschoolers
Parental rights and religious freedom have been the two foundations to establish a constitutional right for parents to teach their children at home. The U.S. Supreme Court some years back weakened the free exercise of religion claim as a foundation for homeschooling so that in order for homeschoolers to claim a fundamental right to homeschool, they must be able to combine the free exercise right with the parental rights claim. In other words, both rights have to co-exist. Currently, this is not a problem, but because of the fragile nature of freedom, moral decay, complacency and apathy, homeschooling freedoms are in jeopardy. Additionally, since the parental rights foundational claim is an "implicit" right, not an "explicit" right-meaning parental rights is not specifically spelled out in the Constitution-parental rights as we know it today is teetering and could be in trouble in the future. Mike will explain why parental rights are under attack and provide a solution on how we can maintain the current freedoms we have to teach our children at home.
